How to Introduce a New Pet
If you have other pets, make sure to introduce your new friend slowly. It can be a really good idea to keep them separated, but allow them to see and smell each other, for a short period of time. Cats especially can have a hard time with a new dog or cat so make sure you help your feline by giving him or her an adjustment period. If you are adopting from a shelter, you might see if the shelter will let you bring your whole family, pets included, for an introduction on neutral ground. This way, the current pets may feel less territorial and not feel like their home is being intruded. A very important thing to keep in mind is that you need to give the current pets the same amount of attention as you always have! If you spend more time with the new pet and less time with the current pet(s), there may be jealousy that develops. This will be counter active to what you are trying to accomplish.
How to Introduce a New Pet
Pets will attempt to establish their own hierarchy, or "who is the boss" situation. You should keep this in mind when the new pet wants to go for a walk, or eat their dinner. The current pet may try to nip, bite, hiss, or growl at the new pet to let them know they are stepping out of place. It can be a good idea to walk them separately for a little while until they get used to each other. You also may want to feed them separately to prevent anyone from guarding their food, or eating all the food so there is none for other pets. If you are introducing cats, make sure there are extra litter boxes around the house. Some cats who are trying to be more dominant may guard the litter box. A good rule of thumb is one litter box per cat in the house, plus one. So if you have 2 cats, you should have 3 litter boxes.
When introducing a new pet and you have children or babies, the most important thing you can do is NEVER leave them alone! Always, always supervise kids and babies around pets. Even the nicest pet can be just fine around kids but the minute the pet feels slightly threatened, it may bite or snap at a little hand or face. Babies make noises and jerky movements that a cat or dog can perceive as a prey animal sometimes. Babies have no defense against cats or dogs. Be sure your baby is in your arms or in a safe place where the pet cannot reach it. Children often get excited around new pets and may accidentally hurt them, the pet does not know they don't mean it and may try to defend itself. Planning, patience, and caution are the keys to a successful introduction of a new pet.

#Research the realistic compatibility of your new pet being housed with your old pets, preferably before you select your new pet. In addition to predator/prey relationships, some animals can be very territorial and aggressive towards members of their own species. Learn what you can beforehand and you'll have a better idea of how much peaceful interaction you can expect your animals to have.
#Consider the personality of your current pet or pets. Think about how your pet acts around you and around other animals.
#Give your new pet as much time as possible to adjust before meeting your current pet. Moving into a new home is enough of a challenge without the added stress of meeting your other pets. If you can, set aside a room for your new pet to stay in for the first few days.
#Keep your current pet's schedule as normal as possible. If you are going to house your new pet in a separate room to start with, restrict the current pet's access to that room well in advance so the change can feel more gradual. Make sure your current pet still gets all the time care and attention he or she is accustomed to.
#Look for "pre-introduction" opportunities. Give each animal items with the scent of the other animal on them. Allowing the animals to smell each others' scent before they actually meet can help make the face to face meeting easier.
#Introduce animals slowly and for small periods of time until they are well adjusted to the sight and smell of each other. Use a crate, child gate, or a leash to control the animals during the interactions. Try to keep the animal who has the most potential to hurt the other one under direct control, either through a leash or a crate. Give the animal that is more likely to be frightened a safe haven where the other pet cannot reach him or her.
#Reward good behavior. Remember that not all animals are going to be friends, so even disinterest is positive. Offer praise, treats, toys, and affection to promote good interactions
#Supervise closely. Don't just throw your animals together and go watch television. Pay attention to the way they interact during different times of the introduction.
#Be patient. Animals need time to adjust to each other, especially if your old pet is older and the new pet is a baby. It might take months before your animals really begin to accept each other.

The Red-eyed Treefrog (Agalychnis callidryas) is an arboreal hylid native to Neotropical rainforests in Central America.
Many scientists believe the red-eyed tree frog developed its vivid scarlet peepers to shock predators into at least briefly questioning their meal choice.
These iconic rain-forest amphibians sleep by day stuck to leaf-bottoms with their eyes closed and body markings covered. When disturbed, they flash their bulging red eyes and reveal their huge, webbed orange feet and bright blue-and-yellow flanks. This technique, called startle coloration, may give a bird or snake pause, offering a precious instant for the frog to spring to safety.
Their neon-green bodies may play a similar role in thwarting predators. Many of the animals that eat red-eyed tree frogs are nocturnal hunters that use keen eyesight to find prey. The shocking colors of this frog may over-stimulate a predator's eyes, creating a confusing ghost image that remains behind as the frog jumps away.
Red-eyed tree frogs, despite their conspicuous coloration, are not venomous. They are found in tropical lowlands from southern Mexico, throughout Central America, and in northern South America. Nocturnal carnivores, they hide in the rain forest canopy and ambush crickets, flies, and moths with their long, sticky tongues.
Red-eyed tree frogs are not endangered. But their habitat is shrinking at an alarming rate, and their highly recognizable image is often used to promote the cause of saving the world's rain forests.

Red-eyed tree frogs, as their name states, have red eyes with vertically narrowed noses, a vibrant green body with yellow and blue striped sides, and orange toes. There is a great deal of regional variation in flank and thigh coloration . Although it has been suggested that A. callidryas' bright colors function as aposematic or sexual signals, neither of these hypotheses have been confirmed . Males range from 2 (5.08 centimetres) to 2½ inches (6.35 centimetres), while female range from 2½ (6.35 centimetres) to 3 inches (7.62 centimetres) on average. Young frogs are typically brown in color and turn greener as they mature, although adult frogs can change their color slightly depending on mood and environment. Red-eyed tree frogs have soft, fragile skin on their belly, and the skin on their back is thicker and rougher.
The red-eyed tree frog has three eyelids and sticky pads on its toes. Phyllomedusid tree frogs are arboreal animals, meaning they spend a majority of their life in trees, which also makes them great jumpers.
Red-eyed tree frogs are not poisonous and rely on camouflage to protect themselves. During the day, they remain motionless, cover their blue sides with their back legs, tuck their bright feet under their belly, and shut their red eyes. Thus, they appear almost completely green, and well hidden among the foliage.

Peacock : The most beautiful bird
Peacocks are large, colorful pheasants (typically blue and green) known for their iridescent tails. These tail feathers, or coverts, spread out in a distinctive train that is more than 60 percent of the bird’s total body length and boast colorful "eye" markings of blue, gold, red, and other hues. The large train is used in mating rituals and courtship displays. It can be arched into a magnificent fan that reaches across the bird's back and touches the ground on either side. Females are believed to choose their mates according to the size, color, and quality of these outrageous feather trains.
The term "peacock" is commonly used to refer to birds of both sexes. Technically, only males are peacocks. Females are peahens, and together, they are called peafowl.
Suitable males may gather harems of several females, each of which will lay three to five eggs. In fact, wild peafowl often roost in forest trees and gather in groups called parties.
Peacocks are ground-feeders that eat insects, plants, and small creatures. There are two familiar peacock species. The blue peacock lives in India and Sri Lanka, while the green peacock is found in Java and Myanmar (Burma). A more distinct and little-known species, the Congo peacock, inhabits African rain forests.

The Indian Peafowl or Blue Peafowl (Pavo cristatus) is a large and brightly coloured bird of the pheasant family native to South Asia, but introduced and semi-feral in many other parts of the world. The male, peacock, is predominantly blue with a fan-like crest of spatula-tipped wire-like feathers and is best known for the long train made up of elongated upper-tail covert feathers which bear colourful eyespots. These stiff and elongated feathers are raised into a fan and quivered in a display during courtship. The female lacks the train, has a greenish lower neck and has a duller brown plumage. They are found mainly on the ground in open forest or cultivation where they forage for berries, grains but will also prey on snakes, lizards, and small rodents. Their loud calls make them easy to detect, and in forest areas, often indicate the presence of a predator such as a tiger. They forage on the ground, moving in small groups and will usually try to escape on foot through undergrowth and avoid flying. They will fly up into tall trees to roost, however. It is the national bird of India.

Though they cannot fly, ostriches are fleet, strong runners. They can sprint up to 43 miles (70 kilometers) an hour and run over distance at 31 miles (50 kilometers) an hour. They may use their wings as "rudders" to help them change direction while running. An ostrich's powerful, long legs can cover 10 to 16 feet (3 to 5 meters) in a single stride. These legs can also be formidable weapons. Ostrich kicks can kill a human or a potential predator like a lion. Each two-toed foot has a long, sharp claw.

Their plumage blends well with sandy soil and, from a distance, gives the appearance that they have buried their heads in the sand.
Ostriches typically eat plants, roots, and seeds but will also eat insects, lizards, or other creatures available in their sometimes harsh habitat.

The Ostrich, (Struthio camelus), is a large flightless bird native to Africa. It is the only living species of its family, Struthionidae and its genus, Struthio. Ostriches share the order Struthioniformes with the kiwis, emus, and other ratites. It is distinctive in its appearance, with a long neck and legs and the ability to run at maximum speeds of about 70 km/h (45 mph), the top land speed of any bird.[3] The Ostrich is the largest living species of bird and lays the largest egg of any living bird (extinct elephant birds of Madagascar and the giant moa of New Zealand laid larger eggs).
The diet of the Ostrich mainly consists of plant matter, though it also eats insects. It lives in nomadic groups which contain between five and fifty birds. When threatened, the Ostrich will either hide itself by lying flat against the ground, or will run away. If cornered, it can attack with a kick from its powerful legs. Mating patterns differ by geographical region, but territorial males fight for a harem of two to seven females. These fights usually last just minutes, but they can easily cause death through slamming their heads into opponents.
The Ostrich is farmed around the world, particularly for its feathers, which are decorative and are also used as feather dusters. Its skin is used for leather products and its meat marketed commercially.

The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is a two-day, all-breed benched conformation show that takes place at Madison Square Garden in New York City every year. The first Westminster show was held in 1877.
The Westminster Kennel Club will stage its 135th Annual All Breed Dog Show on February 14-15, 2011. Its entry limit of 2,500 dogs will feature all 179 breeds and varieties recognized by the American Kennel Club for competition in conformation shows.
The first Westminster show was held on May 8, 1877, making it the second-longest continuously held sporting event in the United States behind only the Kentucky Derby, which was first held in 1875. The show originated as a show for gun dogs, primarily Setters and Pointers, initiated by a group of hunting men who met regularly at the Westminster Hotel at Irving Place and Sixteenth Street in Manhattan. They decided to create a kennel club called the Westminster Kennel Club specifically for the purpose of holding a dog show. The prizes for these first shows included such items as pearl handled pistols, of use to the hunters and terriermen who worked these dogs in the field.
The first show took place in May 1877 at Gilmore's Gardens (the Hippodrome). That show drew over 1200 dogs and proved so popular that its originally scheduled three days became four, with the club donating proceeds from that fourth day to the ASPCA for creation of a home for stray and disabled dogs.
The Westminster Kennel Club predates the formation of the American Kennel Club by seven years, and became the first club admitted to the AKC after AKC's founding in 1884. Breed parent clubs (e.g., the Afghan Hound Club of America) create the standards for judging their breeds, with the AKC administering the rules about shows and judging.
Dogs are judged against their breed standards, to see how close each dog matches the standard, which is a written description of the ideal specimen of that breed. Standards may include references relating form to function in the performance of the job that the dog was bred for, and may also include items that seem somewhat arbitrary such as color, eye shape, tail carriage and more. While many breeds no longer need to perform their original jobs and are bred mostly for companionship, they should still have the innate ability and physical makeup to perform those jobs, and this is what the judge looks for.

Because of space considerations at Madison Square Garden, the entry is limited to 2,500 dogs and fills immediately on the first day that entries are accepted. Since 1992, the club has invited the top five dogs in each breed to be pre-entered (determined by the number of dogs defeated at shows during the previous year) to assure that all the top dogs have the chance to compete.
Today, Westminster takes place over two days and nights every February. During the day, the dogs compete at the breed level (i.e. against other dogs of the same breed). Each Best of Breed winner (BOB) advances into its respective group, of which there are seven (Sporting, Hound, Working, Terrier, Toy, Non-Sporting, Herding). Group competition is held during the evenings, and the seven group winners advance into the final competition, which one judge will select one of them as the Best In Show winner.
Competition in Junior Showmanship (for handlers ages 8-18) has been held since 1934. The eight finalists all receive scholarships for post-secondary schooling. In addition, each year the club (through its Westminster Kennel Foundation) awards veterinary school scholarships for students from six schools.
The show has been broadcast on live television since 1948 and today is one of USA Network's highest-rated sports specials. The program typically airs on a Monday and Tuesday. The Monday night broadcast begins on the USA network and then switches over to CNBC due to the airing of WWE Monday Night Raw. In the past the WWE show would be preempted but that is no longer the case. At the Garden, it has enjoyed sellout status since 2005, as tickets sell quickly once they go on sale each Fall. Indicative of its amazing worldwide popularity, more than 700 press credentials are issued to media attending in person from more than 20 countries. In addition, each year the Westminster Web site (www.westminsterkennelclub.org) has millions of visitors from around the world (about 12 million page views by users from more than 170 countries).

The winning dog becomes "America's Dog" for the next year, and also becomes the world's newest single name celebrity. It begins its reign with a media tour on the day following the show with appearances on virtually all television network morning shows, a visit to the Observation Deck at the Empire State Building, and much more.
The event is embraced in New York City every February, with salutes from such world-famous partners as the Empire State Building, which lights its tower in purple and gold (Westminster colors) during the show; Saks 5th Avenue, which features a street window with a Westminster-themed display; and the New York Stock Exchange, which invites the winner to ring the opening bell following its big win.

Mudpuppies spend their entire lives underwater and are distinguished as the only salamanders that make sound—a dog-like barking.
Mudpuppies, also called waterdogs, are one of only a few salamanders that make noise. They get their name from the somewhat embellished notion that their squeaky vocalizations sound like a dog's bark.
Among the largest of the salamanders, mudpuppies can exceed 16 inches (41 centimeters) in length, although the average is more like 11 inches (28 centimeters). Their range runs from southern central Canada, through the midwestern United States, east to North Carolina and south to Georgia and Mississippi.
Mudpuppies live on the bottoms of lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams, and never leave the water. They hide themselves in vegetation and under rocks and logs, emerging at night to feed on whatever prey they can catch, including crayfish, worms, and snails.
Mudpuppies are easily distinguishable by their bushy, red external gills, which they grow as larva and never lose. They have flat heads, wide tails, stubby legs, and feet with four distinct toes. Their bodies are gray or brownish-gray with blue-black spots.
Females lay large clutches of eggs and guard them until they hatch, a unique trait among salamanders.
Mudpuppies are common throughout their range and have no special conservation status. However, habitat loss and pollution is putting pressure on some local populations.
The Mudpuppy (Necturus maculosus) is a species of salamander that is part of the genus, Necturus. They live an entirely aquatic lifestyle in the eastern part of North America in lakes, rivers, and ponds. Mudpuppies go through paedomorphosis and retain their external gills. Because skin and lung respiration alone is not sufficient for gas exchange, mudpuppies must rely on external gills as their primary means of gas exchange. Mudpuppies are usually a rusty brown color and can grow to an average length of 33 cm. Mudpuppies are nocturnal creatures and only come out during the day if the water they live in is murky. Their diet consists of most anything they can get in their mouths and includes insects, earthworms, mollusks, and annelids. Once a female mudpuppy reaches sexual maturity, at six years of age, she can lay an average of 60 eggs. In the wild, the average life span of a mudpuppy is 11 years. Because of their prevalence and larger size than other salamanders, mudpuppies are good organisms for dissections.

The bottom-dwelling, jelly-bodied nudibranch (NEW-dih-bronk) might seem an unlikely canvas for Mother Nature to express her wildest indulgences of color and form. But these shell-less mollusks, part of the sea slug family, bear some of the most fascinating shapes, sumptuous hues, and intricate patterns of any animal on Earth.
There are more than 3,000 known species of nudibranch, and new ones are being identified almost daily. They are found throughout the world's oceans, but are most abundant in shallow, tropical waters. Their scientific name, Nudibranchia, means naked gills, and describes the feathery gills and horns that most wear on their backs.
Generally oblong in shape, nudibranchs can be thick or flattened, long or short, ornately colored or drab to match their surroundings. They can grow as small as 0.25 inches (6 millimeters) or as large as 12 inches (31 centimeters) long.
They are carnivores that slowly ply their range grazing on algae, sponges, anemones, corals, barnacles, and even other nudibranchs. To identify prey, they have two highly sensitive tentacles, called rhinophores, located on top of their heads. Nudibranchs derive their coloring from the food they eat, which helps in camouflage, and some even retain the foul-tasting poisons of their prey and secrete them as a defense against predators.
Nudibranchs are simultaneous hermaphrodites, and can mate with any other mature member of their species. Their lifespan varies widely, with some living less than a month, and others living up to one year.
Nudibranchs live at virtually all depths of salt water, but reach their greatest size and variation in warm, shallow waters.
The body forms of nudibranchs vary enormously, but because they are opisthobranchs, unlike most other gastropods they are bilaterally symmetrical because they have undergone secondary detorsion. Some species have venomous appendages on their sides. These are used to deter predators. Many also have a simple gut and a mouth with a radula.
They lack a mantle cavity.
Solar powered Pteraeolidia ianthina have adapted cerata to contain zooxanthellae which continue to photosynthesize and provide energy to the nudibranch.
Their eyes are simple and able to discern little more than light and dark.[3] The eyes are set into the body, are about a quarter of a millimeter in diameter, and consist of a lens and five photoreceptors.[4]
They vary in adult size from 20 to 600 millimetres (0.79 to 24 in).
The adult form is without a shell or operculum (a bony or horny plate covering the opening of the shell, when the body is withdrawn).
The name nudibranch is appropriate, since the dorids (infraclass Anthobranchia) breathe through a "naked gill shaped" like branchial plumes of bushy extremities on their back, near their tail rather than using gills.[5] By contrast, on the back of the aeolids in the clade Cladobranchia there are brightly colored sets of protruding organs called cerata.
Nudibranchs have cephalic (head) tentacles, which are sensitive to touch, taste, and smell. Club-shaped rhinophores detect odors.

Ingrid Newkirk (born June 11, 1949) is a British-born animal rights activist and president of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), the world's largest animal rights organization. She is the author of several books, including Free the Animals (2000) and Making Kind Choices (2005).

Alternatives to eggs : Vegan Egg Substitutes
Four fantastic reasons to choose vegan egg substitutes rather than eggs (the unborn embryos of chickens):
1.Male chicks are disposed of because they are considered of no value in the production of eggs. Male chicks--a quarter billion a year--are unnecessarily disposed of (they are killed) at the hatchery.
2.There is horrible crowding within the hens' cages! Though a hen has a wingspan of 30 to 32 inches, she is oppressively confined to an average living space of 48 square inches (about 7" x 7")?a space smaller than most computer screens! Not only is this space oppressive for one hen, but typically 5 to 11 hens occupy this same space!
3.The hens begin to mutilate one another! Because of the crowding and other unnatural conditions, chickens tend to peck at one another, causing bleeding and other injuries. To avoid losing money, egg producers de-beak the birds (with a hot blade), a very painful process, that causes suffering or early death.
4.Hens constantly breathe in toxic ammonia from decomposing uric acid in the manure pits below their cages.

Vegan Egg Substitutes
Ener-G Egg Replacer: This is by far the easiest, most convenient, and best-results-producing of the vegan egg replacers. You can buy this product at your local health food/natural food grocery, or in some "nutrition" sections in "conventional" groceries. Ener-G Egg Replacer is made primarily of potato starch and tapioca flour. I use this in any baking recipe calling for eggs or egg whites. It works wonderfully in cakes, muffins, breads, brownies, and cookies! (1 ½ teaspoon Ener-G Egg Replacer plus 2 tablespoons water is the equivalent to one egg.)Flax Seeds and Water: This mixture works well as a binder in pancakes and breads/muffins, but it does has a distict "flaxseed" or "nutty" flavor. Be sure to grind the seeds into a meal before mixing in a food processor or blender with the water-blend until this resembles a thick milkshake (1/3 cup flax seeds, ground plus 1 cup water equals 6 eggs). This will last, if refrigerated, for 3-5 days.
Mashed or Blended Banana: Bananas are great substitutes for eggs in any sweet baking recipe or pancakes. (1/2 of a banana, mashed, equals 1 egg).
Applesauce: As with the banana, use in your "sweet" baking recipes. (3 tablespoons equals 1 egg.)
Soft Silken Tofu: Make sure to use the "Soft" and "Silken" variety to avoid any gritty bits in your baked goodie. Also, you must use a blender or food processor to get the tofu totally smooth before adding it to your creation. (1/4 cup soft silken tofu, smooth, equals 1 egg).
Experiment, try each of these in your baking as a replacement for eggs. Figure out which one(s) work best and give you the tastiest results. You and our planet will be healthier every time you replace an egg with a vegan substitute. And the chickens will love you for it! Often, one egg in a recipe can simply be skipped, but there are also many tried and true substitutes that work wonders:
Crumbled and seasoned tofu makes delicious morning scrambles and eggless salad. Also, look for eggless mayonnaise, scrambled-tofu mixes, and other egg alternatives in your local health food store. Be aware that Egg Beaters, sold in many supermarkets, are made with egg whites, meaning that twice as many eggs are used in their production since the yolks are discarded.
Instead of using an egg for binding burgers and loaves, try mashed potato, mashed avocado, moistened bread crumbs, or rolled oats. For baking, try the following (each substitute replaces one egg):
Commercial egg replacer (this is a powder sold in boxes at most health food stores)
3 Tbsp. silken tofu blended with the liquid in the recipe
2 Tbsp. cornstarch, potato starch, or arrowroot mixed with 2 Tbsp. water
1 heaping Tbsp. soy flour + 2 Tbsp. water
1/2 banana, mashed
1 Tbsp. flax seeds + 1/2 cup water blended for 1 to 2 minutes or until the mixture is thick and has the consistency of beaten egg whites

PETA focuses its attention on the four areas in which the largest numbers of animals suffer the most intensely for the longest periods of time: on factory farms, in the clothing trade, in laboratories, and in the entertainment industry. We also work on a variety of other issues, including the cruel killing of beavers, birds, and other "pests" as well as cruelty to domesticated animals.
